Directors

Ms. Laurel Powell

This is Ms. Powell’s 27th year teaching at DHS. Throughout her teaching career she has taught
Theatre Arts 1-4, Theatre Production 1-4, Technical Theatre, and the Special Programs Theatre class. As well as teaching, Ms. Powell has directed a variety of shows including numerous award winning One Act Plays that have been seen at the 4A, 5A, and 6A UIL Area, Region, and State Level. In 2023 the One Act Play, The Tin Woman appeared at the 6A state contest placing 6th in the entire state. As well as directing UIL One Act Play, she is also the UIL Prose and Poetry coach. Ms. Powell has been the secretary for the UIL Advisory Committee for the past three years and will be taking over as the new Chair for this upcoming year. In 2009-2010, she was named DISD Secondary Teacher of the Year, representing Dickinson at the Region IV level. She is involved with International Thespian Society, TETA, Alpha Psi Omega, Phi Mu and Southwest Theatre Association. She holds a BA from Lyon College and a MA from the University of Houston. Her students have also competed at the National Level with Education Theatre Association at the International Thespian Festival. Ms. Powell sends her love to Whitney, Olivia, and Elijah for being her whole world in this crazy life.

Mrs. Marisa Hataway

This is Mrs. Hataway’s 20th year teaching Theatre Arts. Before teaching at DHS, she was a 5th-6th grade Theatre Arts teacher at Barber Middle School. Along with teaching middle school theatre, she has directed numerous 30 minute plays. Mrs. Hataway now teaches the Theatre Arts 1 classes, the Special Programs Theatre Class, the Musical Theatre classes & Theatre 2 at DHS. She has been active with the DHS Theatre Department since she was in high school. Mrs. Hataway is a proud DHS Gator, class of 2000 and she holds a Bachelor of Arts from Lyon College in Batesville, AR. Working at DHS the last 16 years has provided her with so many opportunities and she is so proud of all of the hard work her students show her each and every day. She is especially proud of the Reveliers first UIL One Act Play State Appearance in 2023. Mrs. Hataway is so happy to be able to share this Theatre world with her husband and their adorable 7 year old twins, Emma & Lucas.

Mrs. Roxanne May

Mrs. May has joined Dickinson High School in 2022 as the new Technical Director of Theatre and is so excited to be a part of the Dickinson Theatre family. She has worked professionally in the Houston theatre area for Stages Repertory Theater, The Alley, Horsehead Theatre, Catastrophic Theatre, Houston Shakespeare Festival and many others. Previous to joining the Dickinson team, she
worked for a Race Team  on the NASCAR Truck Series, building, painting and wrapping trucks during the world pandemic. Mrs. May graduated from The University of Houston with a BFA in Theatrical Production and is thrilled to be sharing her passion for the arts with her students for years to come. It is an honor for Mrs. May to create and teach while being supported by her loving husband, an overly spoiled cat and dog duo, and her precious three year old daughter, Willow.
